Edward Bury Sr. 1935-2024

Together again

BOARDMAN — Edward Bury Sr., 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024.

Ed was born Oct. 14, 1935, in Youngstown, a son of Peter and Caroline Vogrin Bury.

He was a 1953 graduate of Wilson High School and was a lifelong resident of the Youngstown area.

Ed married the love of his life, the former Loretta Vrabel, on Feb. 16, 1957, and they shared 63 years of marriage until her passing, Oct. 10, 2020.

Ed worked in the aluminum extruding industry as a plant manager in multiple companies throughout the Youngstown area.

He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Luke Church in Boardman and the Holy Name Society. Ed also ran the chicken dinner stall at St. Luke’s festival for many years.

Ed loved taking family beach vacations to Hilton Head Island, Wildwood, New Jersey, and Florida. He especially loved trips with his grandchildren and jumping the “Big Busters!” He loved fishing with his buddies around here, Lake Erie and Alaska with his son and grandsons. Ed traveled to Japan and Europe, and took a cruise through the Caribbean.

Ed was most happy when helping family. He could fix anything! He built the “Great Wall” at his son’s home, dropping over 300 bags of mulch around his great-grandkid’s play area just two years ago; demo and rebuilding his daughter’s kitchen; multiple brick patios; and a huge garden so his wife Loretta could grow every vegetable known to man, but never eat a single one. He smoked his homemade kolbasi and passed on the tradition to his son. Ed’s biggest smiles came when he spent time with his great-grandchildren! Showing him their LEGO creations, swimming skills, artwork and just sitting and talking to him!

Throughout his life, Ed cared for family and those around him. He was only 13 when he started working at Fiffick’s gas station to help support his family. When he came home in the dark, grandma would watch for the light on his bike as he came down Poland Avenue after crossing the Center Street bridge. She would then make him dinner while his sister Carole kept him company.

He will be deeply missed and always remembered by his children, Dr. Ed (Joellen) Bury of Stow and Linda Bury of Boardman; his grandchildren, Dr. Luke (Christan) Bury, Dr. Cathleen (Peter) Zignego, Madeline (Paul) Fisher, Conor (Ali) Bury and Nick (Dr. Andriana) Bury; great-grandchildren, Caroline, David, James, Ella and Jack Bury, Emma and Luca Zignego, and Naomi and Simone Fisher; siblings, Michael (Jean) Bury, Carol (John) Garchar and Bob (Susan) Bury; sister-in-law, Carol Pezzuto; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta; daughter, Mary Pat; sister-in-law, Barbara Bury; and his brother-in-law, James Vrabel.

The Bury family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell. Calling hours will be 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, at St. Catherine of Siena Parish-St. Luke Church, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Father Brian Cline.

Edward will be laid to rest in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
