Anthony J. Garthwaite 1946-2025

BERLIN CENTER — Anthony J. Garthwaite, 78, passed away Monday evening, Jan. 6, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

Anthony was born Feb. 16, 1946, in Youngstown, a son of the late John and Rose Vari Garthwaite.

Raised in Poland, Anthony attended Poland Seminary High School until enlisting in the United States Navy in 1964. He was stationed in Boston and served in Vietnam for six months. He often spoke of hitchhiking home from Boston for family visits.

Anthony was honorably discharged in 1968 and returned to the area. He worked in the steel mills for a short time until becoming an assembler for General Motors Lordstown Plant. At the age of 55, Anthony retired from General Motors.

It was in 1968 that Anthony met his wife, the former Myra Hoover, and they married Feb. 15, 1969. They first made their home in Canfield and Austintown, until settling in at Berlin Center. Anthony enjoyed spending quality time at his home in Berlin Center. He took peace in caring for his seven-acre property, which included lawn maintenance, gardening, bird watching and fishing on the lake. He also was a collector of dolls, coins, diecast cars and model trains. He had an extensive train collection in his basement.

Anthony was devoted to his Catholic faith, a faithful and longtime member of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, and attended both St. James Catholic Church in North Jackson and St. Catherine Catholic Church in Lake Milton.

After 35 years of marriage, Anthony’s wife, Myra, passed away, July 29, 2004.

Anthony leaves to carry on his legacy, three sons, Steven (Tricia) Garthwaite of Poland, Thomas Garthwaite of Jackson Township and David Garthwaite of Charlotte, North Carolina; two brothers, Michael P. Garthwaite of New Middletown and Timothy M. (Diane) Garthwaite of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Paige Garthwaite of Hubbard, Meredith Garthwaite of Poland, Nathan Garthwaite of Columbus, and Ashlyn and Donovan Garthwaite, both of Jackson Township; brother-in-law, Charles (Linda) Hoover of Granger, Indiana; and three cousins whom he cherished, Julie (Steve) Szalko, Donna (Jack) Karnia and Phil (Peggy) Faust, all of Oaklawn, Illinois.

Besides his wife and parents, Anthony was preceded in death by one brother, John “Jack” (Mary) Garthwaite; and brother-in-law, William Hoover.

Anthony’s family will receive friends 9 to 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025, at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home, with Deacon Paul Lisko officiating.

Interment will follow in Poland Riverside Cemetery.
