Ernest Anderson 1932-2024
YOUNGSTOWN — Ernest “Ernie” Anderson, 91, formerly of Canton, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, at the Hospice House in Youngstown.
He was born in Coatesville, Pa., on Oct. 9, 1932, to the late Ernest and Mildred Ruth Oswald Anderson Sr.
He graduated from Steubenville High School in 1950 and the College of Steubenville (now Franciscan University of Steubenville) in 1959.
Ernie received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Air Force after serving during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954. He retired from Republic Engineered Steel (formerly Republic and LTV) in 1995 after 35 years of service. In 1964, he received the President’s Achievement Award as the most outstanding Jaycee while a member of the Cleveland Jaycees. He was a member of the Board of Managers at London Square Village Condominiums in Canton for a number of years, including eight years as president and also was the property manager before moving to Florida in 2009.
Ernie loved spending time with his family, going on family vacations, eating out, going to the casinos, listening to his music, living in Florida and going to Disney World.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gladys M. Walter Anderson, in February 2008; his sister, Zoe Tomeucci; his brother, Ronald Anderson; and his dear friend, Janie Gocala.
He is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Cheryl and Lou Fortunato of North Jackson and Becky and Ken Creak of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren and their spouses, Lynn Fortunato and Billy Jones, Ryan and Erin Creak, Kortney and Justin Marree, and Christopher and Kimberly Fortunato. He was blessed with six great-grandchildren, Landon, Sophia, Liam, Evelyn, Brady and Declan. He is also survived by his brother, Gerry Anderson, and sister-in-law, Linda Walter; along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44511, with Pastor Duane Jesse officiating. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m.
