Dennis J. Fiddler 1951-2024
YOUNGSTOWN — Dennis Joseph Fiddler died peacefully at Hospice of Valley on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024. He was 73 and had been ill with kidney disease for many years.
Dennis was born in Oil City, Pa., the son of Daniel and Virginia Potkoscielny Fiddler. He attended St. Nicholas Elementary School and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1969. He then attended Youngstown State University.
After high school, Dennis worked at Arby’s in Boardman and then Burkland and Son Florist. In 1969, a friend recommended him for a job on the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, where he eventually became a locomotive engineer. In 1980, he transferred to Conrail passenger and freight yards, where he guided trains through the New York area. Dennis enjoyed working in New York and made many friends, especially in the religious community at Fordham University.
He was passionate about many things, including Guardians baseball, golf, opera, classical music and religion. He was a devoted member of St. Columba Cathedral. He attended Mass at many area churches, was a Eucharistic minister and lector, and distributed communion at St. Elizabeth Hospital for many years. He had a strong connection to the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites Akron Community of the Holy Family.
Dennis leaves a sister, Danielle Kaczensky (Tobey) of Annapolis, Maryland; two nieces; and two grandnieces and one grandnephew.
The family would like to thank the many people at St. Columba who included him in their community and loved him. Dennis found peace and love in his friendships there.
