Mary Jane Kavanagh 1939-2024
LIBERTY — Mary Jane Komer Kavanagh, 85, of Liberty, passed away Thursday evening, Sept. 19, 2024, from heart complications.
Born in 1939 in Pittsburgh, Pa., Mary Jane moved to Youngstown in 1953. She graduated Ursuline High School (1957), St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing (1962) and was a registered nurse anesthetist at St. Elizabeth Hospital, where she met Terence Kavanagh, M.D., her husband of 56 years.
She is survived by Terence; her five children, Kieran, Kevin and wife Katherine, Renny and husband Aaron Starner, Shane and wife Karen, and Arlene and wife Laura; nine grandchildren, Aidan, Lila, Mathilde, Maeve, Vera, Mia, Macy, Alexandra and Stella; and brother, Ronald Komer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruth; and brothers, John and Bob.
Mary Jane was a special soul beloved by all. She was genuine, kind and thoughtful, a dear friend and a second mom to everyone her children brought home. Among the countless memories left behind are her St. Francis-like care for animals, her legendary orange cookies and recipes, tough-love discipline, numerous phrases and sayings, and her laughter.
Mary Jane is, perhaps, best described as an impressive woman. She had a keen mind, strong will, great fortitude and perseverance. She was whip-smart and spoke truth to power, serving as a role model for her children and grandchildren.
Over the years she wasq very active with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, St. Edward Church and school, Ballet Western Reserve, and Logan Swim and Tennis Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or stjude.org.
