Steve J. Potkonicky Jr., 1946-2024

YOUNGSTOWN — Steve J. Potkonicky Jr., 77, of the city’s West Side, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2024.

Born Dec. 30, 1946, in Youngstown, Steve was a son of the late Steve Potkonicky Sr. and Margaret Tusin Potkonicky. A lifelong resident of the area, Steve’s life was defined by his unwavering commitment to service and his vibrant, engaging personality.

Steve attended Chaney High School and subsequently served with distinction as an Army combat medic during the Vietnam Era. His courage and dedication during this challenging time shaped a lifetime of service. Following his military career, Steve enjoyed a fulfilling role with the Catholic Diocese, retiring after many years of dedicated work at both Calvary and Resurrection cemeteries.

Steve was a member of the former Holy Name of Jesus Church. He was a member of various social clubs, including the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3298 in Austintown. He enjoyed golf, bowling and darts, activities through which he forged lasting friendships and brought joy to those around him.

A beloved father and grandfather, Steve especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Steve is survived by his five children, James Potkonicky of Lothian, Maryland, Steve J. Potkonicky III of Youngstown, Christina (John) McGarry of Youngstown, Amy Lynn (Robert) Strojny of Charleston, South Carolina, and David (Mandy) Potkonicky of Youngstown; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his sister, Beth (Don) Kredel of Youngstown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Joe Potkonicky.

Family and friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2024, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m.

Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown at a later date.
