Samuel J. Mills 1928-2024

GIRARD — Samuel J. Mills, 96, passed away peacefully, Thursday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2024, at Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.

Samuel was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Youngstown, a son of the late John and Rose Costanzo Mills and lived in Girard for most of his life.

He was a 1946 graduate of Girard High School and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, a testament to his dedication to his country.

After his military service, Sam embarked on a successful career as a self-employed Realtor, a profession he loved and continued well into his early 90s. He also spent over 20 years working at General Motors Lordstown before retiring. His work ethic and commitment were unmatched.

A lifelong member of St. Rose Church, Sam was a familiar face at Saturday Mass, where he served as an usher. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in all that he did. His life revolved around his faith, work, and most importantly, his family. He found immense joy in spending time with his loved ones, whether it was enjoying family vacations or simply being together. Sam also found pleasure in playing golf, a pastime that brought him relaxation and camaraderie.

Sam’s memory will forever be cherished by his daughter, Patty Mills, with whom he made his home; his granddaughter, Megan (Marc) Eichert of Boardman; two great-grandchildren, Ian Jones and Raeann (Josh) Flask; and several nieces and nephews and extended family members.

His wife of 59 years, Agnes R. Forte Mills, whom he married Dec. 18, 1950, died April 8, 2009.

His son, Ronald J. Mills, and 10 siblings, Fred Mills, Francis J. “Butch” Mills, John Riley, James Riley, Emmett Riley, Carol Arthur, Patricia Riley, Angie Mills, Delores Platt and Margaret Komlanc, also preceded Sam in death.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 222 S. State St., Girard. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024, at the funeral home and continue with a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St., Girard.

Interment will follow in Girard Liberty Union Cemetery where Sam will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Agnes.

In lieu of flowers, Sam’s family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley – Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Youngstown, OH 44514.
