Raymond Hurd 1929-2024

NORTH LIMA — Raymond “Ray” Hurd, 95, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024.

He was born June 4, 1929, in Youngstown, the son of the late Dallas L. and Dorothy Mercer Hurd.

Ray graduated from Canfield High School in 1947 and from Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1951.

He married his wife, Katherine L. Hawk, on June 8, 1952.

Ray served his country as an Army lieutenant from 1952 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict.

Ray received his Ph.D. in mathematics from The Ohio State University in 1965.

He taught high school math in Oakwood, Chardon and Columbus. Ray was a math professor for 30 years at Youngstown State University until retiring in 1990.

Ray belongs to Mount Olivet Church; he was an elder in the church and served on the consistory and 21 years as the treasurer. He played in the handbells choir.

Ray enjoyed gardening, collecting coins and singing with always “Hurd” gospel group that was composed of his family.

Besides his wife, Katherine, whom he’s been married to for 72 years, he leaves to cherish his memory daughters, Nancy (Phillip) Valentine of Canfield and Anita (Bryce) Gillam of Columbiana; and son, Duane Hurd of Defiance. He also leaves seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kathlyn Hurd; and sister, Muriel Moore.

Family and friends may call 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024, with a service at 3 p.m., at Mount Olivet Church of Christ, 410 South Range Road, North Lima, OH 44452.

Military honors will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2024, graveside, at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
