Marie E. Lewis 1942-2024
HOWLAND — Marie E. Lewis, 82, passed away peacefully at her home following a courageous battle with breast cancer, Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024.
Mrs. Lewis was born Feb. 10, 1942, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Sam and Elizabeth “Red” Coradetti Verdreame. She was a 1960 graduate of Youngstown East High School.
Marie married her high school sweetheart, Dennis B. Lewis Sr., on June 12, 1965, at St. John Episcopal Church, after his graduation from West Point. After Dennis left the service, they began a generational business, Lewis Construction in Warren. Marie was vital to the business, particularly during the company’s early years.
Marie and Dennis raised two wonderful children and enjoyed many adventurous and loving years together until Dennis Sr. died in 2009.
Marie enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was a member of the Trumbull Country Club. She was an enthusiastic card and game player and enjoyed gathering around the table with her long-time friends and family, where laughs were shared and memories made while she ran the table.
Marie was philanthropic and was committed to giving back to her community to provide opportunities for future generations. She was an active volunteer and board member of the Barbara Lewis Roberts Foundation, benefitting Northeast Ohio Adoption Services. Additionally, she was a generous contributor to numerous organizations, many of which assisted children, the arts, animals, health and education.
Above all, she cherished her family and enjoyed spoiling loved ones and friends, often with perfectly baked cookies and treats. She was always ready to host a party to celebrate any occasion. Her 15-foot Christmas tree was the centerpiece of warm gatherings every holiday season. It went up before Thanksgiving and stayed up way past her birthday.
She loved and doted on her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, creating special treats, baking projects, crafts and events for all the holidays, no matter how minor. Her grandkids were her sunshine.
She was the best at loving people. She never missed concerts, games, birthdays or any reason to make someone feel special. This included her pets and granddogs, and they enjoyed being equally spoiled by her.
She is survived by her son, Dennis B. Lewis Jr., and his wife, Amy of Howland; her daughter, Eileen M. Mutolo, and her husband Vince, of New Hope, Pa.; and five grandchildren, Madeline (Cole) Clevenger, Audrey Lewis (Franklin Morgan), Vivian Lewis (Jeremy Wall), Vincent Mutolo and Trevor Mutolo. Also surviving are her stepmother-in-law, Carolyn Lewis of Howland; a sister, Beverly Gronvall of Boardman; a brother, Angelo Verdreame of Austintown; a brother-in-law, Carter (Carole) Lewis of Howland; and many adored nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Northeast Ohio Adoption Services, 5000 E. Market St., Suite 26, Warren, OH 44484, noas.com/make-a-donation/.
Calling hours will be 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024, at St. John Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Abraham Allende officiating.
Interment will take place at a later date in West Point Cemetery, West Point, New York.
