MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- John Maxwell Gilbert, 86, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.
John was born Aug. 31, 1937, to Aletha Haugh Gilbert and Jo Maxwell Gilbert.
After John graduated from Boardman High School, he studied at Ohio University then Youngstown State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. He was a member of the Sigma Xi fraternity.
John served in the United States Army before transitioning to a long and successful career in sales, first with U.S. Steel, then in the pharmaceutical industry.
Earlier in life, John was active as an artist in the Harrisburg, Pa., area and, at the time, was a member of the Art Association of Harrisburg and Gallery Doshi. He later volunteered as a youth sports coach. In retirement, John volunteered at the Hershey-Derry Township (Pa.) Historical Society.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carole, and his son, Scott (Lori), of Camp Hill, Pa.; and two grandchildren; as well as his nephew, Jay Reilly (Karlyne) and his family.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Molly Gilbert Reilly, and her husband, Donald T. Reilly. His family and friends will greatly miss his upbeat demeanor and tremendous sense of humor.
In accordance with John's wishes, no services are planned.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg.
