Anthony Tountas Sr. 1943-2024
YOUNGSTOWN — Anthony Tountas Sr., 81, of the city’s West Side, passed away peacefully, Tuesday evening, Aug. 6, 2024, in the comfort of his home.
Born on Feb. 12, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the cherished son of the late Gus A. Tountas and Helen Markis Tountas.
As a young boy, Anthony moved to the Youngstown area, which would become his lifelong home. He was a proud graduate of South High School, Class of 1961, and dedicated over 30 years of his life to General Motors Lordstown, retiring in 1999.
Tony was a member of St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman.
He also served his country with pride as a member of the United States Army. His sense of camaraderie extended to his membership in the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3298 in Austintown.
He had a passion for collecting — his treasures included coins and antique model trains, which brought him much joy over the years. His love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies of fishing and golfing. A weekly coffee meet-up with friends was a highlight of his social life, where stories were shared, and laughter was abundant. However, his greatest joy came from the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Anthony is survived by his daughter, Denise Johnston of Boardman; three grandchildren, Anthony Tountas of Youngstown, Todd Johnston of Boardman and Logan Johnston of Boardman; a brother, John (Lee) Tountas of Streetsboro; a sister, Athanasia Haloulos of Avon Lake; a daughter-in-law, Gwendolyn Tountas of Warren; a son-in-law, Pat (Kelly) McGinn of Michigan; his longtime friend, Patty Herman of Austintown; his beloved dog, Mister Pickles; and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Tony was preceded in death by his son, Anthony Tountas Jr., and his daughter, Maryann McGinn.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, where a funeral service will take place at 6 p.m.
