Richard R. Roscoe 1935-2024

GUSTAVUS — Richard R. Roscoe, 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Hospice House in Poland.

Richard was born March 11, 1935, the youngest son of Alexander and Judith Britko Roscoe. He was a 1952 graduate of Gustavus High School and a lifetime Gustavus resident.

Richard retired in 1986 from LTV Steel (Republic) in Warren, where he worked as a mechanic, welder, pipefitter and millwright for 30 years, reaching his goal of retiring at the age of 50. He worked as a mechanic at Sharp Chevrolet in Kinsman and as an automatic screw machine operator at Glauer Brass. He was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church in Cortland.

Richard was the last of six Roscoe brothers to play on the Gustavus High School Varsity Basketball team. Remarkably, the brothers played for 14 consecutive years, 1938 to 1952. When he was a junior and senior, he was elected to the Trumbull County Varsity League 4 Basketball Team. As a young man, Richard worked for his brothers, Charles and Edward, at Roscoe’s Poultry on Steel Street in Youngstown, and also worked at Bloomfield Flea Market and Auction.

On Sept. 1, 1956, Richard married Audrey Deimling, and together they purchased their first farm in Gustavus in the 1960s. In addition to and while working at Republic Steel, Richard was also a dairy farmer for several years. Along with his brother Stanley, they owned and operated Roscoe Brothers Inc., a fertilizer, lime and seed company in Gustavus, which continues to operate to this day. They grain-farmed soybeans, wheat and corn together, and did custom harvesting and trucking together as well in Trumbull and Ashtabula counties. Richard obtained his CDL license and drove one of the RBI’s semis over the road.

He was a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, Trumbull County Grange, National Farmers Union and the Soybean Council. He was a supporter of the Buckeye Sheriff’s Association and Trumbull County FOP.

Richard was a director on the Trumbull County Agricultural Society “Fair Board” for 37 consecutive years; he was vice president for three years and president for 12 years; he never lost a director’s election. During his time on the fair board, he was nominated for Ohio Industry’s Hall of Fame Award in 2009 — there are only eight other individuals nominated in the entire state annually.

Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Audrey Deimling Roscoe, who passed away Oct. 11, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Procopio; his brothers, William, Eddie, Amil, George, Charles, Alexander Jr. and Cornell; his sisters, Ethel Hamilton and Elona Rosco; and a son-in-law, Jim Kalasky.

Richard is survived by his children, Debbie (Gary) Gaydosh, Richard (Dawn) Roscoe Jr. and Sharon Kalasky; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Richard loved to have his family and friends visit him on the farm and talk on the phone with him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Thursday July 25, 2024, at St. Robert Catholic Church, 4659 state Route 46 in Cortland, with Father Ryan Furlong as officiant.

Friends and family may call 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the church.

Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Robert Church or given to the church for Mass. Visit www.lanefuneralhomes.com to share memories and condolences with Richard’s family.
