Jon Coppola 1959-2024

YOUNGSTOWN — Jon Coppola, 65, passed away from natural causes Wednesday, July 14, 2024.

He was born Jan. 27, 1959, in the Brier Hill section of Youngstown, the son of Carmella Jane Scarpine and Michael Robert Coppola.

Jon went to St. Anthony’s grade school and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1977. He won a full scholarship to and attended the University of Southern California, and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Youngstown State University.

Jon was an accomplished CPA whose career took him from Cleveland with Ernst & Young, Washington, D.C. with Coopers Lybrand, and finally to Boston, Massachusetts, with Control Data Systems, before eventually returning to Youngstown in 2016. While living back home, he offered his accounting and organizational skills in service to local nonprofits such as the Mahoning County Returning Citizens and others that provide assistance to client groups throughout Youngstown.

Jon was endeared by all things sports and music. Before he left the area he built bocce courts and started leagues at Girard Royal Gardens and at Avalon Gardens. He was the head coach of the Norfolk Little League baseball team during the years his son played. Once back in town, Jon would often be found at the ITAM Post 12 bocce court in Brier Hill, listening to music and playing his guitar. He was an excellent bocce player, winning tournaments and leagues in Girard and Youngstown, and cashing in at prestigious events in Cleveland and Las Vegas. At the time of his demise, he was helping coordinate the ITAM bocce league.

Jon is survived by his son, Matthew; his two brothers, Michael and Thomas; nieces, Carolyn Jane and Shelly; and nephew, Keith.

The Coppola family entrusted Jon’s care to the Schiavone Funeral Home in Youngstown. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024, followed by a life remembrance service at the funeral home, 1842 Belmont Ave., Youngstown, OH 44504.
