Tod J. Bogan Jr. 1936-2024
CHANDLER, Ariz. — Tod John Bogan Jr. passed away peacefully, Thursday, June 13, 2024, surrounded by family.
Tod was born Aug. 30, 1936, in Youngstown, to Tod John Sr. and Anastasia Coleman Bogan. Tod was the oldest of six boys. He graduated from Ursuline High School in Youngstown in 1955.
On May 21, 1960, he married Mary Frances “Fran” Furlong. In 1971, Tod and his family moved from Youngstown to Buffalo, New York, and eventually to Camillus, New York, in the summer of 1976. Tod and Fran called Camillus home for 36 years. They raised their children, Kathleen, “Kathy” and Jeffrey “Jeff” in Camillus and they enjoyed upstate New York. Tod enjoyed boating and could often be found with family and friends at Oneida Lake on the weekends.
Tod enjoyed working and loved his career. He had various executive roles in the food and drugstore industries. Tod was president and COO of Carl’s Drugs and the VP of operations for Great American Foods. He was also an entrepreneur and started a technology company, RETcom, where he developed many patents for grocery shopping user experience.
Upon his retirement, Tod and Fran enjoyed traveling together and spending time with Jeff and his family in Phoenix, Arizona. They fell in love with the Western United States and loved exploring it together.
Family was everything to Tod. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was instrumental in their upbringing. Dani, Marion, Chad and Ciara were lucky to have “Toddy Boy” as their grandfather. They could count on him to take them to their after-school activities and could be found cheering them on at their various sporting events, recitals and plays.
After Fran passed in 2012, Tod moved to Phoenix, where he could embrace his love of the outdoors. He was often found hiking in the desert and mountain terrain, and it wasn’t uncommon for him to complete 10-mile hikes. When not on the trail, he could be found at the gym or in the pool. He also loved being in the sun and lying by the pool listening to country music.
When not enjoying the outdoors, he could be found reading, watching classic Western movies and was always up for a conversation on current world affairs. He loved watching football on Sundays with his grandkids and looked forward to spending time together with family during the holidays. Tod also became known for his candy-making skills and friends and family on the East Coast and West Coast would look forward to his confectionary creations.
Tod was preceded in death by his wife, Fran; daughter, Kathy; brothers, Jerry, Pat, Jim and Larry; and parents, Tod and Anastasia.
Tod is survived by his son, Jeff (Leslie Davis) Bogan; brother, Terry (Angela) Bogan; grandchildren, Danielle and Marion Rafte, and Chad and Ciara Bogan; son-in-law, James Rafte Jr.; Chad and Ciara’s mother, Melinda Bogan; longtime friends, Allen and Kristie Braun; his companion, Barbara Carlise; many nieces and nephews; and his dogs, Chip and Peaches.
“You were so incredible and we will miss you, immensely. You were our ‘go-to’ when life got rough; you were our sanity in this sometimes crazy world and our comfort when we needed clarity. You were always someone we could count on and always provided sound advice. You were an incredible dad, grandparent, brother, friend and mentor.”
A celebration of Tod’s life will be held Aug. 30, 2024, in Syracuse, New York. Additional details for the celebration will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, stjude.org.
