Richard J. Saunders 1934-2024

AUSTINTOWN — Richard Joseph Saunders, affectionately known as Dick, passed away peacefully in his home on June 6, 2024, in his hometown of Youngstown.
He was born on May 24, 1934, to the late John and Catherine Barry Saunders.
Dick was a proud member of the U.S. Army and a Korean War veteran. His dedication to his country was a testament to his unwavering loyalty and patriotism.
Richard was known for his affable demeanor, quick wit and sharp intellect. These qualities allowed him to excel in his sales career — primarily The Winkle Electric Company — where he generated and managed territories with great success. He left a lasting impression on his colleagues and clients, who admired his professionalism, honesty and genuine kindness.
Dick and Betty’s love for traveling took them far and wide, but he held a special place in his heart for the ocean, particularly a beach on Oak Island, North Carolina. It was there that he experienced some of his most cherished family moments, making lasting memories that will be treasured by all. The expanded families continue to plan trips to meet on the same beach in the summer.
The greatest joy and source of motivation in Richard’s life was his beloved wife of nearly 67 years, Betty Jane Mastadonna Saunders. Their enduring love story began in high school, and they were united in marriage on Sept. 14, 1957. Together, they built a life filled with love, dedication and happiness, raising five children: Andrew (Laurie Jean), Laurie (Tim), Richard Jr. (Carol), Mary Elizabeth (Joe), and David (Gina).
Richard was a devoted father, and his family meant the world to him. His legacy lives on through his 11 grandchildren (Cameron, Alec, Andy, Amy, Nick, Emily, Katie, Natalie, Olvia, Zachary and Gabriel) and three great-grandchildren (Lucy, Emory and Fiona).
Richard was preceded in death by his three older siblings, Bill, Jack and Rosemary. He leaves behind a rich legacy of love and laughter that will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. June 14, 2024, at St. Joseph Church in Austintown to honor Richard’s life and celebrate the impact he had on those around him.
Friends may visit from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church to pay respects prior to the service.
Richard Joseph Saunders will be dearly missed but never forgotten. We will miss his jokes and his laughter. May his soul rest in eternal peace. “Goodnight. God bless you, we love you.”
