Joseph E. Hornyak, 1956-2024

LIBERTY — Joseph E. Hornyak, 68, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Hospice House, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born March 30, 1956, the son of Joseph and Mary Louise Reilly Hornyak.

He grew up on the North Side of Youngstown and was a graduate of The Rayen School. While growing up, Joe enjoyed the outdoors, especially going to Lake Milton, where he liked to swim and water ski.

Over the years Joe acquired many self-taught skills that led to a career as a maintenance man. He was employed by the DoubleTree Hotel in Youngstown, where he enjoyed the fellowship of his co-workers.

Joe was an easygoing and friendly person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed fishing, motorcycle riding and visiting flea markets, where he was always looking for a bargain. Every year he looked forward to spending the holidays with his family and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, as he was proud of his Irish heritage.

He will be greatly missed and his memory cherished by his sisters, Kathy (Rich) Bindas, Rosemary Glod and Mary Ann (John) Opincarne; his nieces, Holly Lehman and Elizabeth Opincarne; his nephews, Chuck Merkich, Rob White, John Opincarne, and especially his nephew Michael Hornyak, with whom he shared a home, a birthday and a special bond. He is also survived by Debby Hornyak and her family.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ellen Ross, whom he helped to care for in her later years.

There are no services. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The family requests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrot Road, Youngstown, OH 44514.
