LAKE MILTON — William Edhris Garland Jr., 72, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Hospice House, with his wife, daughters, brothers and sisters by his side.

Bill was born March 3, 1952, in Youngstown, to the late William Sr. and Irene Garland. He graduated from Austintown Fitch High School in 1970.

Thereafter, he began a 48-year career working at GM Lordstown, where most of his time and skills were spent in paint repair. He took great pride in his work, ensuring that every vehicle he touched was up to his standards (perfection).

Bill married his beloved wife, Catherine Protain, on April 7, 1984. They just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. She was his partner and friend in life’s journey. They were blessed with two children: Katie and Sarah. He took immense pride in their accomplishments in academics and sports. He cherished every moment spent with them, especially family vacations to Topsail Island, North Carolina.

After their retirements, he treasured trips with his wife to Hawaii and Europe, where they visited England, Scotland and Wales. While there, Bill enjoyed a private ride in a Morgan Motors Company Plus 6 car.

In addition to his love for cars, Bill took meticulous care of his lawn, which he kept pristine. He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and he and Cathy were previously season ticket holders. He was an active member of Greenford Christian Church in Austintown, where he and his wife served and were part of a wonderful church family. He found solace, guidance and community in his faith.

Above all else, “Poppy” cherished spending time with his grandchildren. They brought immense joy and happiness into his life and he treasured every moment spent with them, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Bill is survived by his wife, Catherine; daughters, Katie (Chad) Morris and Sarah (Nicholas) Serb; grandchildren, Finley, Jude, Knox and Gabriel; siblings, Donna (Doug) Gilkerson, Jeffrey Garland, Caroline (Doug) Bryan and John Garland; uncle and aunt, John and Grace Fusco; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Irene Garland; maternal and paternal grandparents; and aunts and uncles. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Lane Funeral Home in Austintown, with a funeral service to follow at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Of The Valley – Hospice House, in honor of Bill’s legacy of kindness and generosity.
