Michael J. Costello Jr. 1974-2024

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Michael “Mickey” Costello Jr., 49, of Virginia Beach and Poland, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep and pronounced in death, Saturday, May 11, 2024.

He was born Nov. 16, 1974, in Youngstown, the loving son of Michael Costello Sr. and Bonnie Taylor.

Mickey graduated in 1993 from Warren G. Harding High School. He continued his education and graduated with several bachelor’s degrees in arts, music, music performance and music conducting from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music. He served as opera conductor for Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore,” and both Puccini’s “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly”; in addition, he was principal conductor of the Youngstown Youth Wind Symphony and Youngstown Youth Chamber Winds. Mickey went on to obtain a master’s degree in business administration and a master’s in financial and health economics.

Mickey also excelled in the business of healthcare, holding many significant executive roles, including vice president, interim clinic operations for OSF Healthcare, Peoria, Illinois, where he provided oversight of the medical group, hospital and ambulatory operations for a large portion of the organization, as well as 650-plus providers; vice president of operations and medical group COO at SWLHA Lake Charles Memorial, Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he provided oversight of ambulatory operation, surgical services and patient access for 214 providers.

Mickey will be remembered for his laughter, his love for music, and his unwavering love for his family and friends. He was a great brother, the best uncle, a wonderful cousin and the dearest friend, whom we all loved laughing with. Mickey had the ability to make a new acquaintance feel like a long-lost friend and a friend feel like family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Mickey leaves behind his brother, William Costello of Poland; and sister, Nicole (Brad) Root of Charleston, South Carolina; niece, Giana Costello; and nephews, Michael A. Costello, Johnathan Tumbri and Bryce Root.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Bonnie Taylor and Michael Costello Sr.

In honor of Mickey, his ashes will remain forever free along the beaches of the Outer Banks, North Carolina, along with his beloved mother’s ashes.
