David W. Best 1954-2024
NEW SPRINGFIELD — David W. “Digger” Best, 70, lost his four-year battle with cancer on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
Dave was born March 6, 1954. He is the fifth child of James Best Sr. and Alberta Mikesell Barrett. He graduated from Springfield Local High School in 1972 and married his wife, Sandy, in 1974. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 20, 2024.
Dave was a heavy equipment operator his whole life, that is where he got his nickname, “Digger.” He started working right out of high school with Bertelli Homes and Dave Sugar Contracting and then began his own construction company, Digger Excavating.
He enjoyed camping, cruising, traveling and riding his motorcycle. After retiring in 2020, Digger and his wife became snowbirds in Zephyrhills, Florida, where he made many good friends and enjoyed the Saturday night dances. He also enjoyed singing “Ring of Fire” with his two little neighbors, Bexleigh and Paxton, on his back porch.
Dave will be greatly missed by his wife, Sandy; his brothers, James Jr. (Sandy), Tom (Sue), Dan (Sue) and Joe; his brother-in-law, Don (Denise) Feren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Doreen Leach; his brother, Jerry; and his father and mother-in-law, Denis and Doris Crum.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2024, at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana, followed by the funeral service at 7 p.m. with Pastor Kari Lankford officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana. Family and friends may view this obituary and send condolences at www.familycareservices.com.
