Susan Joy McKean 1947-2024

YOUNGSTOWN — Susan Joy McKean, 76, cherished mother, esteemed photographer and beloved member of the Youngstown community, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 24, 2024. She leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity and unwavering courage that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her.

Born in Connecticut and raised in New York, Susan was a proud graduate of Youngstown State University.

Not only was Susan a talented photographer, but she was also a gifted artisan. Susan’s artistry extended beyond the lens, as she was renowned for her exquisite afghans. Each stitch was a testament to her dedication and skill, bringing warmth and comfort to those fortunate enough to receive them. A highlight of Susan’s year was always the Canfield Fair, where she eagerly participated in photography competitions and showcased her stunning afghans. Through the years, she won several awards, her passion for these endeavors infectiously inspiring those around her.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, Susan found her greatest joy in motherhood. Susan would tirelessly undertake piecemeal seamstress work to support her family, demonstrating her unwavering commitment and strength. She poured her heart and soul into raising her five children.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Carol Rafa and Marian Kling; siblings, Carolyn, Michelle and Johanna; as well as her son, Michael McKean.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Ronald McKean and his wife, Deborah of Annandale, VIrginia; Eric McKean and his wife, Melia of Dothan, Alabama; and Vincent Caputi of New York City; daughter, Julie Grant and her husband, George of Richmond, Virginia; her grandchildren, Anthony, Ryan, Kyle, McKenzie and Reese; and a large extended family and circle of friends.

Susan will be remembered for her courage, kind heart and unwavering loyalty to her family and friends. Her legacy lives on through the memories she created and the lives she touched.

In respect of her wishes, there will be no funeral services, so like Mom.
