Michael R. Ragan 1956-2024

BOARDMAN — Michael R. Ragan, 67, passed away peacefully after a two-year struggle with cancer, Friday morning, April 19, 2024, at Briarfield Place in Boardman.

Mike was born July 26, 1956, in Youngstown, a son of the late Joseph J. and Eda Serromani Ragan.

Raised in Boardman, Mike was a 1974 graduate of Boardman High School and a 1981 graduate of Youngstown State University.

Michael’s business career started at Steego Auto Parts as an outside salesman, which was how he met his late wife, Merry, while she was working at her father’s machine shop, a client of his.

After leaving Steego, he became the owner / operator of R&S Paint, beginning in 1989, opening a store on Youngstown-Poland Road before moving to Market Street in 2017. Michael was a paint supplier to many families, professional painters, businesses and schools across the Valley, but often connected with his customers as much more. He also took great pride in seeing his employees go on to succeed in their long-term career endeavors after R&S.

While a basketball fan and player in his youth, Michael developed a deep love of soccer and golf later in life. He started coaching soccer after his sons wrapped up their playing careers. Michael coached a variety of ages and skill sets, including the Catholic Youth League, Cardinal Mooney High School and finally serving as head coach for Newton Falls High School.

Michael loved to read a wide variety of topics, was a fan of professional wrestling and all forms of music, especially live shows. He enjoyed studying finance in his spare time as well. Giving back to the local community was important to Michael, participating in the Struthers Lions Club and serving as a board member for the Boardman Soccer Association.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Ragan Alley; sons, Sam and Trevor (Kimberly) Ragan; and grandsons, Lucas and Jack.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Merry L. Kelso Ragan; and their cat, Mr. Zero.

Mike’s family will receive friends 1 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, where a memorial service celebrating his life will follow at 3 p.m.

Mike’s family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Mike’s name take the form of either local music or local soccer organizations.
