Magdalen ‘Laney’ Krichbaum 1923-2024

Laney was born in Youngstown, July 28, 1923, the daughter of John and Eva Staub. She was a proud 1941 graduate of East High School and worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube for several years before marrying the love of her life, Earl F. Krichbaum Jr., on Sept. 14, 1946. Together, they raised five children.

Upon Earl’s death in 1989, Laney returned to work at St. Patrick’s school on Oak Hill Avenue, and later for Sister Jerome’s school on Essex Street until she retired.

Laney was always happy, fun-loving and adventurous. She was a great mother and role model for her children and their children. She was proud and independent, feisty and opinionated, but always kind and forgiving. She was a flower grower, a game player, an amusement park junkie with her grandkids and a traveler. She made sure all her children learned to swim because she couldn’t, to read and play music because she didn’t, and to educate themselves, always. Most of all, she taught love and kindness, generosity and the joy of life to all of us by her example.

Laney was a devout Catholic and raised her children in the Catholic faith at St. Joseph Parish in Youngstown, and later, at St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown, where she was a member of the altar guild. She belonged to several clubs, including the Weed and Seed Garden Club, the Fertile Fillies Card Club and her weekly Dominos Dames.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Kathie Krichbaum (Kevin Breyer) of Minnesota, Donna Cordova of Wyoming, Judge R. Scott (Sharon) Krichbaum of Youngstown, Rick (Cathy) Krichbaum of Florida, and Amy (Jace) Cifranic of Cleveland; her grandchildren, Molly and Jessica, Jason and Tracy, Zack and Brian, Casey, Jamie and Tyler and their spouses; and her beloved 13 great-grandchildren. Laney was also very fond of Scott’s dog, Elvis.

Laney was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; her brothers, Tony Staub and Eddie Staub; and her sisters, Theresa Louis and Annabelle Sause.

She was not only loved by all of her family, but by all of her friends and just about everyone who had the good fortune of meeting her. Her trademark farewell phrase can now be said to each of you once more: “Love you more.”

Her ashes were interred with those of her husband in Calvary Cemetery.

Our family extends heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Jim Demidovich, Nurse Kim Lewis, the personnel at Briarfield Place, Ed and Diane Reese and Sanctuary Hospice, for caring for our mother. Special thanks to Msgr. Peter Polando and Laney’s friend, Amy Robillard.

A celebration of life Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, at St. Charles Church in Boardman. Friends may visit the family before the services, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the church.
