James E. Maytas Jr. 1968-2024

BOARDMAN — James E. Maytas Jr., 55, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at his home.

Jim was born July 17, 1968, in Youngstown, a son of James and Donna Aey Maytas.

He graduated from Struthers High School in 1986. After graduation, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1987 to 1993 and during the Gulf War. He served on the USS Portsmouth (SSN 707) submarine. During his time in the military, Jim received the Navy Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; the Navy “E” Award; letters of commendation; and the enlisted Submarine Service Insignia, and the enlisted Scuba Diver Insignia.

After his time in the service, Jim worked as a financial manager for several dealerships in California before returning to the Mahoning Valley. He worked as a financial manager for Mark Thomas Ford in Cortland for seven years before his weightlifting accident which left him a quadriplegic in 2011. Before his accident, Jim enjoyed motorbiking and dancing. In his free time, Jim enjoyed painting and drawing.

Jim was a devoted son, father, grandfather, and brother. He enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed hosting friends and family at his home.

Jim is survived by his mother, Donna J. Maytas of Struthers; three children, Christopher J. Maytas of Boardman, Gabriella (Shawn Mellott) Maytas of Austintown and Jeremy D. Maytas of Providence, Rhode Island; and a grandson, Cylus A. Mellott; a brother, Christopher (George L. Chako Jr. ) Maytas of Akron; and a sister, Kimberly (Martin Planey) Maytas of Austintown; his former wife, Margaret A. Maytas of Providence, Rhode Island; four nieces, Hannah Planey, Abigail Planey, Madalyn Planey and his goddaughter, Kara Planey, all of Austintown; and dear friends, George T. (Beth) Syrianoudis of Canfield, Mike (Tanya) Floros of California, Todd (Wendy) Kennedy of Palm Coast, Florida, and Amber Rouse of Austintown.

Besides his father, James E. Maytas Sr., Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Sophia Rose Maytas.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2024, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2024, at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers.

A prayer service will begin at 10:30 a.m., at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2024, at Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Church, 764 Fifth St., Struthers, with the Rev. Fr. Philip Rogers officiating. Military honors will follow, at the church.
