Gerald F. Thorn 1940-2024

“Jerry,” as he was affectionately known, was born Aug. 30, 1940, in Morgantown, W.Va., a son of James C. and Merle Johnson Thorn.

He worked as a painter for General Motors in Lordstown for 32 years, retiring in 1998. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1966 to 1968.

Jerry married the former Ruth Ann Marteny on Oct. 10, 1964. They shared 59 years of marriage and many happy memories together. She survives him.

He loved classic cars, especially his 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. Jerry’s greatest joy was his family, especially watching his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Besides his wife, Jerry is survived by two sons, John E. (Kellie) Thorn of Mineral Ridge and Rodney L. (Lisa) Thorn of Salem. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Jacqlene, Julia, Jed, McKayla, Lindsey, Tyler and Bailee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Richard Thorn; and a sister, Patricia Jones.

Jerry’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Harmony Hospice and Humility House for all of the kind and compassionate care shown to him.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the Thirsty Frog banquet hall, 5423 Mahoning Ave., Suite F, Austintown, OH 44515.
