Ruth E. Sharec 1927-2024

NEWTON FALLS — Ruth Eileen Sowers Sharec, 96, passed away peacefully into eternal rest, Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, at Ohio Living Lake Vista in Cortland.

She was born July 17, 1927, in Warren, the daughter of the late Bayard Frederick Sowers and Rilla Miriam Beck Sowers. Ruth married her lifelong friend, George Eli Sharec, on Aug. 2, 1953, and they were blessed with 54 years of marriage until he passed away, May 2, 2008.

Ruth graduated from Newton Falls High School, Class of 1945, and attended Syracuse University School of Library Science. Ruth worked at the Newton Falls Public Library for 20 years. After her retirement, she was appointed as a member of the board of trustees for the library and served as secretary of the board until May 2008.

Ruth, along with husband George, worked to carry on their interests in agriculture, promoting conservation tillage, no-till farming, timber and wildlife management. They hosted farm tours and were recognized statewide and nationally for their endeavors.

Ruth was president of the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts Auxiliary; was a member of Mahoning Valley Grange 1272; served as a state delegate; was a member of the Trumbull County Farm Bureau; and was secretary of the county board for 22 years. She also was a member of the Newton Township Cemetery Association and had a keen interest in local history.

In May 2003, the Sharecs donated an agricultural easement of 249 acres to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, preserving the farm to keep the land in agricultural production for perpetuity.

Per Ruth’s wishes, she has been cremated and her ashes will be scattered in locations on the farm with her husband, George.
