Richard C. Cramer 1944-2023

NEW YORK — Richard Carl Cramer died peacefully, Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, at the age of 79, at Mount Sinai West Hospital in New York City.

Richard was born March 30, 1944, in Youngstown, the son of Myrle Edward and Margaret McCauley Cramer .

Richard graduated from Struthers High School and began his hair styling career by studying at Lewis, Weinberger and Hill Beauty School. He styled hair at salons in the Youngstown area and for the Youngstown Playhouse. His career took him to Atlanta and Dallas. For most of his life, he was a stylist and colorist at some of the finest salons in his beloved New York City, and had a wonderful and famous clientele.

Richard was a great storyteller and loved to make people laugh. He had that special sparkle that brought out the humor of daily events, family moments and “job related” anecdotes. He shared this talent with family and friends. He took his talents to new heights on weekends as a single act and part of an ensemble troupe in New York City and New Jersey cabarets. He had a passion for cooking and hosted many parties for family and friends. He was also a world traveler and enjoyed the sites of the Taj Mahal, Bavarian Festivals in Germany, Big Ben in London, and Hong Kong, to name a few. He traveled of course within the United States for family visits and pleasure. One of his favorite sayings about one of his favorite places was “Find the joy. But when all else fails, go to Las Vegas.”

Richard is survived by two nieces, Cynthia M. Carpenter and Pamela Cramer Barnes; and friends, Bill and Maureen Kandray and their children, whom he considered family; as well as many dear friends in Youngstown and New York City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Jessie Jean Philips; two daughters, Letitia Cramer and Lillian Cramer; brothers, James, Thomas and Robert; sisters-in-law, Alice Spellick and Mrs. James Cramer; and niece, Sherry Cramer.

A celebration of his life will take place at a later date.

Arrangements were made by Crestwood Funeral and Cremation Services, 445 West 43rd St., New York, NY 10036.
