KEMAH, Texas -- Mary Louise White Baxter passed away Saturday, Jan 6, 2024.
Born Aug. 31, 1937, in Highland Park, Michigan, she was the daughter of Frances Vlasic White and John White. Although spending the last several years in Texas, she grew up in and always considered Youngstown her home.
After graduating from The Rayen School in 1955, she was offered and accepted a position with the State Department in Washington, D.C.
On Aug. 3, 1957, Mary was united in matrimony with a young soldier, David Young Baxter, and spent the next 12 years living and working in Germany, Africa and Taiwan. In the U.S. she also lived on military installations in Massachusetts, Arizona and Maryland. Unfortunately, shortly after retiring from the Army, her beloved husband died suddenly in 1981.
Her career as an executive secretary included the Department of the Army, the Military Assistance Advisory Group, Good Samaritan Medical Center, the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation and the Area Agency on Aging. Furthering her career, she attended Youngstown State University, which developed her love for writing. While there, she proudly received the Vietnam Veterans' Scholarship. This led to the ownership of Boardman Resume and Secretarial Services for almost 20 years, holding free workshops for OBES to help veterans transition back into the workforce.
Being of the Catholic faith, she taught religious education in Germany and typed songs and prayer responses when the Mass was switched from Latin to English.
Her memberships included the Red Hat Society; Austintown Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary; National Association of Uniformed Services; Society of Military Widows; and charter membership in the Professional Association of Resume Writers.
The pride and joy of her life was in raising her big family: one daughter, Lesli Eden Viana (Sergio) of Texas; and four sons, David Young Jr. (Lisa) of Ohio, Brett William (Maryanne) of Ohio, Randall Clifford (Belynda) of Texas and Derrick John (Kathy) of Georgia. She loved being a grandmother, as well as a great-grandmother.
She also leaves a sister, Marjean Bulla of Youngstown; and her loving, longtime companion and friend, Raymond Melewski of Canfield.
At her request, there will be no services.
