Irene Horodnic 1938-2024

POLAND — Irene Horodnic, 85, formerly a longtime resident of the Shenango Valley and recently of Poland, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 20, 2024, at the Inn at Walker Mill in Boardman.

Mrs. Horodnic was born May 21, 1938, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Michael and Helen Hubyak Ledney. She was a 1956 graduate of Sharpsville High School.

She spent the majority of her life working as a cashier at the former Riverside Market in Brookfield.

A woman of strong faith, Irene was a member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, Campbell, and St. John Orthodox Church, Hermitage, Pennsylvania. She lived a Christian life and honorably taught Sunday school for several years and was an active volunteer at the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration, Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.

The matriarch of her family, she looked forward to the opportunity to display her cooking skills and prepare for her family gatherings. Many said, “Her door was always open.”

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, George Horodnic Sr., whom she married May 3, 1958; two sons, George Horodnic Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Poland, and Dr. Robert Horodnic and his wife, Cynthia, of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania.; and a sister, Jane Zalewski of Hermitage, Pennsylvania.

In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Vavrek and Eleanor Dougherty; and a brother, Michael Ledney.

The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Orthodox Monastery of the Transformation, 321 Monastery Lane, Ellwood City, PA 16117.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 301 Struthers-Liberty Road, Campbell, OH 44405. The Panachida service will be 7 p.m. at the church.

An additional calling hour will be 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024, at St. John’s Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Road, Hermitage, Pennsylvania. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.McGonigleFuneral omeandCrematory.com .

A funeral service will be held immediately following at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Orthodox Church, Hermitage, Pennsylvania., with the Rev. David Mastroberte and the Rev. Andrew Bartek co-officiating.

Interment will be in St. John’s Orthodox Cemetery, Hermitage.
