Maureen Kane Loewenwarter 1960-2023

MISSOULA, MT — Maureen Kane Loewenwarter passed away peacefully, Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She will always be remembered for her grace and compassion, her endless kindness and her sense of adventure.

She is survived by her siblings, John (Cathy), Jim, Kate and Bob Kane; her daughter, Krista (Trevor Zimmerman); and husband, David; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Mary Lou (Hackett) Kane; and her brother, Mark.

Maureen was a 1978 Austintown Fitch graduate and a graduate of Youngstown State University.

She headed West to live her adult life, spending time in California, then beginning her teaching career in Arizona before moving to Missoula, Montana. She recently retired from a stellar career in elementary education.

Maureen was a naturalist who introduced a generation of students to Montana’s wildflowers, birds and trails in the Rattlesnake neighborhood. She helped found the Rattlesnake Elementary School garden, which has an apple tree planted in her name.

She loved swimming, floating and camping the rivers and lakes of the Seeley Swan Valley with her many friends. She loved the Blackfoot River.

Maureen will be dearly missed by so many whom she touched and influenced.

A celebration of Maureen’s life will take place in Missoula, Montana in the spring.
