Michael D. Starkey Sr. 1972-2023

YOUNGSTOWN — Michael Dennis Starkey Sr., born Feb. 3, 1972, in Youngstown, peacefully left this world Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, at the age of 51. He was a beloved husband, devoted father and cherished friend to many.

Although Mike’s journey on Earth was marked by simplicity, his impact on those who knew him was immeasurable. Despite facing hurdles early in life, he persevered, showing immense strength and determination.

Mike worked diligently as a machinist in the technology industry, contributing his skills to the success of Twitchell Technology Products.

Raised in a tightknit community, Mike’s warm personality and infectious laughter made him a friend to many. His compassionate heart and willingness to lend a helping hand endeared him to everyone he encountered. He possessed an uncanny ability to make strangers feel like old friends, leaving a lasting impression on their lives.

Mike was the husband of Leslie Starkey, his devoted partner and confidante. Together, they shared the joys and challenges of life, creating beautiful memories along the way. Their love was a beacon of hope for all who witnessed it.

Michael attended The Rayen School and worked at Twitchell Technology in Dothan, Ala. A man of faith, he attended Nevels Church of God in Christ. He was an avid lover of football, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes and Dallas Cowboys. He also had a fond appreciation of gospel and R&B music.

The memory of him also is cherished by five daughters, Jasmyn Fornore, Michele Starkey and Miesha Starkey, all of Youngstown, Kylah Starkey of Dothan and Shaunese Moses of Atlanta; two sons, Michael D. Starkey Jr. and Lavonte Starkey, both of Youngstown; sisters, Alexis Tellington of Texas, Aquanetta (Scott) Dixon and Sylvia Starkey; brothers, Frank (Erica) D. Starkey III, Brandon Staples and Dana Staples; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine Tellington-Starkey and Frank Starkey Sr.

In accordance with Mike’s wishes, his earthly remains will be cremated. Mike’s legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, humility and resilience will inspire us as we navigate life’s uncertain paths.

We find solace in the loving memories and the support of those around us. Let us come together to honor the life of Michael D. Starkey, Sr., and find comfort as we bid farewell to a truly extraordinary person. Rest in peace, dear Michael. You will be deeply missed, but forever remembered.

The family also expresses great appreciation to everyone for the ministries of prayer, peace and presence during our time of loss. Hebrews 6:10 declares in part, “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints.” May you be richly and exceedingly blessed!

As we mourn the loss of a loved one, we come together to celebrate the life of Michael D. Starkey Sr. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a public viewing 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, at the Jaylex Event Center.

Following the viewing, a funeral service will be at 10 a.m. We will gather to share stories, memories and honor the life of a remarkable man who touched our lives in profound ways.
