Edward L. Carson 1956 -2023

GIRARD — Edward L. Carson, born June 19, 1956, departed this life on Thursday, July 27, 2023.

He was a resident of Girard, and left many friends throughout the country, who miss him dearly.

He was a 1974 graduate of Ursuline High School, a 1978 graduate of Youngstown State University, and a 1981 grad of Akron Law School.

Ed was the son of Ed and Florence Carey Carson, who preceded him in death. His brother, Mark, also left him too soon.

Ed leaves his brothers, Matt (Lisa) Carson of Akron and John of Girard; and former sister-in-law, Ann of Niles. He also leaves his nieces and nephews, whom he loved and adored, Katelyn, Zack, Cameron and Julia.

Ed was licensed to practice law in 1981. He was a member of the Mahoning County Bar Association for more than 30 years. Ed was a founding member of the Lawyers Assistance Committee, which was formed specifically to help attorneys and their families who struggle with substance abuse or mental health issues. This committee was formed in 1995, under the then MCBA president, Atty. Sam Amendolara.

Ed served as guardian ad litem for the Juvenile Court, and was one of the most compassionate GALs that appeared in that court.

Ed also served as a court appointed attorney for those who found themselves in the criminal justice system but could not afford an attorney; and he zealously represented them. He treated his clients, other attorneys and the Court with the utmost respect and dignity. He enjoyed a stellar reputation in the legal community. Ed was no stranger to hard work; but he always maintained a great sense of humor and would light up a room when he walked in. Ed was an encourager to both new and seasoned attorneys and was eager to assist others professionally and personally whenever he could. Ed’s laughter and joy for life live on in the many memories that his friends hold so dear.

His range of friends is vast, including grade school, high school, the legal community, artistic groups, AA friends, and absolutely anyone who met him. He was greatly loved and cherished. Ed was well-read and loved poetry. He was quite the wordsmith and took delight in creating his own poetry and prose. His letters to his family and friends are keepsakes. Ed became a skilled artist working primarily in collage and some stamping. His art themes ranged from whimsical to serious themes. He has a collaborative show through the month of September at TAG in Warren.

Per his request, Ed’s body was sent to NEOMED in Rootstown for the medical students to study.

Friends of Eddie will be holding a private celebration of life. Their favorite phrase of his is something that Ed lived by, “Every person deserves his own dignity.”

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to one of these charities that Ed has chosen: Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity; a gift to a charity focusing on the LGBTQ community; or Catholic Charities.
