Rosalie Brown 1931-2023

YOUNGSTOWN — “Rosalie Brown, my mother, Mommy, Gypsy Rose, Grammy, Sweet Pea and Grand Lady, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 24, 2023.”

Rosalie was born in Youngstown, on April 21, 1931, the fourth child and daughter of King David Rhodes and Bessie Mae Percival.

Rosalie was a 1949 graduate of East High School, a homemaker and mother raising 11 with patience and determination. She continued her education, graduating in 1976 from Youngstown State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. After graduation she was employed at the Child and Adult Mental Health Center as a special education teacher and a counselor for D&E Counseling Center in Youngstown. Rosalie made time to participate in community and civil affairs as a member of the NAACP, Youngstown Urban League and as a member of New Hope Baptist Church, serving as an usher.

Rosalie’s life will be cherished, and her smile will be missed by her sister, Mari Burney of Youngstown; and brother, Turhan Cecil Rhodes of Miami, Fla., children, Corliss E., Galen A. and Jerome W. Brown of Youngstown, Marcia Y. Terrell and Karen L. (Donald) Jones, also of Youngstown and Ronci L. Eke and Tramin H. (Toni) Brown of Houston, Texas; 26 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, King David and Bessie Mae Rhodes; sisters, Elizabeth, Ruby, Laura and Lillie Mae; brothers, John and Leon David; daughter, Alison C. and sons, Lyndon J., Rodney N. and Keith R. Brown; and grandchildren, Tamara Grissett and Jason L. Olds.

Rosalie filled our lives with love and laughter, and embraced us with warmth, leaving her imprint on our hearts. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Grace Evangelistic Temple Church, 2214 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown.
