Joseph L. Maughan 1931-2023

GIRARD — Joseph L. Maughan, 91, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Joseph was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Newton Falls, the son of Joseph W. and Sarah Johns Maughan.

He was a graduate of Girard High School and a lifelong resident.

Joseph proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After returning home, he worked for Republic Steel LTV and later, Rogers Lumber.

Joseph was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard, where he served as an adult altar server for funeral Masses and was a Eucharistic minister for the church. He was also a member of the Girard Knights of Columbus.

In his spare time, Joseph enjoyed going to Tod Park to play bocce with his many friends. He loved gardening and was an avid lover of John Wayne and Matt Dillon.

Joseph was a man of many things; he enjoyed working with his hands and was a carpenter by trade. He was a devoted family man who was a great provider for his family.

Joseph leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Beth Ann Fisher of Columbus, Joseph (Debbie) Maughan Jr. of Fort Myers, Debbie (Tom) McGiffin of Girard and Judy (John) Hunter of Powell; grandchildren, Stephany (Zach), Joseph (Sarah), Brandon, Ryan (Kaitlin), Brittany (Jon), Caiti (Tim) and Ethan; and great-grandchildren, Joey, Jeffrey, Jacob, Savannah, Maddy, Adley, Ella, Liam, Tucker, Auggie and Elliot.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Stacchiotti Maughan, whom he married June 11, 1952, and who passed away Oct. 5, 1994; a grandson, Bradley; sister, Glendora McAllister; and brothers, Robert and William Maughan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2023, at St. Rose Church in Girard. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church, until the time of service. Joseph will be laid to rest in Pineview Cemetery, next to his wife.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice, in Joseph’s memory.
