James M. Goldie 1930-2023
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — James Matthew “Jim” Goldie, passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Goldie was born and raised in Youngstown, the son of James and Vida King Goldie.
Jim graduated from Case Western Reserve University, where he was president of Delta Tau Delta; president of the Interfraternity Council; a member of Omicron Delta Kappa — national honorary based on scholarship and leadership; and captain of the University Golf Team.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954 and the reserve from 1954 to 1956.
He joined the staff of the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce, then became the first employee, executive director, and eventually president of The Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio, which he helped develop. Jim became executive vice president of Baglier Ford of Warren, then purchased and operated Country Ford of Bristolville for many years. In this capacity, he became treasurer of the Cleveland District Ford Dealers Advertising Fund and board member of the Ohio Auto Dealers Association.
While in Youngstown, Jim was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and a longtime member and president of the Youngstown Country Club.
In the late 1980s, he and his wife, Lynda, relocated to Naples, Florida, where he became affiliated with Clyde Quinby in syndicating and developing real estate.
In the mid-1990s, Jim created SJG Land Trust — including William Shew, college roommate, and Al Johnson — and purchased the North Naples Golf Range. The group purchased and developed projects such as I-75 Corkscrew, which now houses Estero Chevrolet and Hampton Inn; and I-75 Colonial, which now houses A-1 Auto, Bob Evans, Colonial Bank and Lee Observational Hospital. They also created the North Naples Research and Technology Park, which replaced the North Naples Golf Range, plus many small individual projects.
In Naples, Jim was a member of Moorings Presbyterian Church, Imperial Golf Club, The Club at Barefoot Beach and Minor League.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lynda Redhead Goldie of Cortland; and two daughters, Jill and Jennie (Scott Foster), all of Asheville, N.C.
A private family memorial service was held at The Cathedral of All Souls, Friday, March 3, 2023. A celebration of life will be held at Grove Park Country Club, Saturday, March 25, 2023.
