Dr. William Gordon 1928-2022

WARREN — Dr. William “Billy” Gordon, 94, a devoted husband, father, dentist and photographer, died peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022, at his home.

Born in Youngstown to immigrant parents, Billy loved the outdoors. His love of nature grew along with him, from Boy Scout to Eagle Scout to Scoutmaster. He loved woodworking, metalworking and crafting things with his hands. His love of both learning and teaching was a constant throughout his life.

Billy earned his undergraduate degree from Ohio University and his degree in dentistry from The Ohio State University. He later served several years in the Navy as a naval dentist, becoming a first lieutenant. During his years in the Navy, Billy perfected his photographic skills.

Beloved by his patients, Dr. Gordon practiced dentistry for 61 years before retiring at age 90. Although he corrected other people’s smiles, it was his smile that was made of sunshine. From a very young age, Dr. Gordon learned and practiced “a little consideration, a little thought of others, makes all the difference.” He achieved the Dental Society’s Recognition of Outstanding Service.

In 1963, Billy met and married the love of his life, Carol Bender Gordon. They were actively involved with Inspiring Minds, providing students opportunities to better themselves through education. Other passions included nurturing a backyard garden, DIY woodworking projects, continuing education classes at Kent State University, and community volunteering. In honor of his 80th birthday, the Butler Institute of American Art exhibited 135 of his photographs.

Billy was a treasured member of Temple El Emeth, B’nai B’rith, Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity, Corydon Palmer Dental Society and Inspiring Minds.

Billy lived for the day. He never complained. The simplest of family times brought much pride and joy.

Billy is survived in blessed memory by his loving wife, Carol; and children, Amy (James) Keller, Michael (Allison) Gordon and Jennie (Matt) McCann. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Halle and Drew Gordon, and Lucy McCann.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, in the Itts Memorial Chapel at Anshe Emeth Cemetery, 584 Granada Ave., Youngstown, OH 44505. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service, in the cemetery chapel.

In memory of Dr. Gordon’s passion and community service, the family encourages donations to Youngstown charities: Inspiring Minds and Butler Institute of American Art.

Arrangements have been entrusted to The Shriver-Allison-Courtley-Weller-King Funeral Home.
