Edward J. Krcelic 1943-2022
Edward Joseph Krcelic
PETERSBURG — Kind, adventurous, selfless, patient and wise. This is how our family describes our dad, grandpa/papa and husband, Edward Joseph Krcelic. Ed was surrounded by his family when he died on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 at Hospice of the Valley, after spending just five days in the hospital due to several medical complications.
Ed was born in Youngstown in 1943, the son of Nicholas and Helen Susinka Krcelic. He spent his early years helping on the family farm and attending his studies. He enjoyed and did well with both. He met Ida while attending Springfield Local High School and after they both graduated from Ohio State University, they married in 1965 and began their lives together as teachers, farmers, small business owners, walkers, bikers, travelers, parents and grandparents.
In the 1980s, Ed was the driving force behind introducing computers into the Salem Public School curriculum. This might seem quaint by today’s standards. But this was no small feat because at that time those in power strongly believed that computers were just a “fad.”
After retiring from teaching, Ed had a second career with Ida as small business owners of The Dryin’ Barn. Together they planned and planted, weeded and nourished. They spent a lifetime together outside.
Just a few days ago, Ed was reminiscing about the weeks long camping trips our family would enjoy during the summers, driving out west, with the pop-up camper, staying at KOA camp grounds.
Though Ed was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease over 10 years ago, he and Ida continued to travel in the U.S. and in Europe. The time he spent with the grandkids was treasured by all. Ed continued to keep busy around the farm, too, with gardening and general upkeep of the home he built over 50 years ago.
If you were lucky enough to know Ed, you knew he was an all-around good guy who enjoyed life and above all loved his family.
We are saddened by his death. Ida Mercer Krcelic, his wife of 57 years; his children, Cheryl (Andrew) Rand, Amy (Charles) Mostaka, Brian (Rebecca) Krcelic and Denise (Mike) Sankey; his grandchildren, Abby, Alex, Jordan, Christopher, Addison, Corey, Kenzie, Maya and Myles; his brother, Bob (Lynn) Krcelic; brother-in-law, Boyd Hird; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his great-grandmother, Mary Krcelic; and his sister, Carol Hird.
We are grateful that Ed’s end-of-life wishes were well documented. He chose to donate his body to Northeast Ohio Medical University. And donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, www.parkinson.org
Friends and family may call between 3 and 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022, at Golden Rye Grille, 10745 Main St., New Middletown. A private celebration of life for the family will follow.
We are grateful for the support of so many friends and family over the years. You contributed to Ed’s good life and he loved you very much.
