Jeffrey Howell 1958-2022

RICHMOND, Va. –Jeffrey Howell, 64, died peacefully on Sunday, May 29, 2022. Born in Youngstown on May 16, 1958, to James and Janet Manigault Howell, Jeffrey was the oldest of three siblings: a brother, Jon (Adrienne) Howell, and sister, Janeen Howell Runyon.

In his early teen years, he formed a lifelong friendship with his close-in-age uncle, Jerome Manigault; and cousin, Tracy Robbins. The “three amigos” did everything together. Their playful, mischievous antics became legendary in the family’s lore.

After graduating from South High School in 1976, Jeffrey joined the Army and served for four years. His training as a culinary specialist equipped him for a demanding career in food service preparation.

In the 1980s, seeking better opportunities, Jeffrey moved to Richmond with his girlfriend, Janice, and their young son, Jeffrey Jr., living for a time with his uncle, Jerome (Donna) and family. A hard-working, exacting cook, he quickly landed on his feet, building a reputation of impeccable service in more than 25 years working with servers and managers at several popular Richmond eateries, including Olive Garden, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, and World of Beer.

Jeffrey married Melissa Robbins in 1999, and they had four children, Jaylan, Jaydah, Jordan and Jazmyn. Although they later divorced, they remained friends and worked together for several years professionally and in raising their four children.

Jeffrey adored his children and was a dedicated father. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan; he loved watching ESPN and HGTV; and he amassed a sizable collection of watches and baseball jerseys. He was generous and kindhearted despite the rigid demeanor he depicted, and he never lost his mischievous sense of humor.

He is survived by his children Jeffrey Jr. (Kierra), Jaylan Howell, Jaydah Howell, Jordan Howell and Jazmyn Howell; grandson, Jaxson Jeffrey; girlfriend, Jasmine Miller of Richmond, Va.; ex-wife Melissa; parents, James and Janet Howell of Youngstown; siblings, Janeen Howell Runyon of Youngstown and Jon (Adrienne) of Bloomington, Ill.; uncle, Jerome (Donna) of Richmond, Va.; cousins, Tracy Robbins (Rolanda) of Youngstown and Edward Howell Jr. of Taylors, S.C.; two nephews and one niece; and many other relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
