David A. Rhodes, D.D.S., M.S. 1947-2022

LIBERTY — David A. Rhodes, D.D.S., M.S., 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Monday afternoon, June 20, 2022, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Youngstown, following a long illness.

David was born in Youngstown on March 16, 1947, the son of Jack and Katherine Josephine Repasky Rhodes.

David was a 1965 graduate of Youngstown North High School, completed a newly established three-year pre-med program at Youngstown State University in 1968, received his Bachelor in Dentistry, Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Science in Dental Research degrees from The Ohio State University in 1972, and earned his degree in orthodontics at Case Western Reserve University in 1975. Between his years of schooling, he was a general dental resident at the Youngstown Hospital Association.

In 1976, Dr. Rhodes established his orthodontics practice in Niles, David A. Rhodes D.D.S., M.S. He later expanded his practice to locations in Champion and Liberty. After 40 years, he retired from his practice, in 2017.

He was a member of several dental and professional organizations: American Association of Orthodontics; Great Lakes Society of Orthodontics; Ohio Association of Orthodontics; Cleveland Society of Orthodontics American Dental Association; Ohio Dental Association; Corydon Palmer Dental Society; Warren Dental Society; Warren Study Club; plus various alumni associations.

He was a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Niles, and was honored with a Paul Harris Fellow. Throughout his career, Dr. Rhodes was an active member of the Mahoning Valley, donating his time and energy for the betterment of his profession and his community.

He faithfully attended and was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church, until its closing, and was also a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hubbard. He and his wife, Linda, loved to sail and camp at Pymatuning Lake and spend time with family, walking the beach and bike riding in Sanibel Island, Fla. David collected model trains, proudly restored the family’s antique tractor and showed it for many years at the Canfield Fair. After retirement, he also liked to attend car shows with his 1976 Corvette. David’s greatest joy in life was his family and he will be dearly missed.

David is survived by his wife, Linda D. Spognardi Rhodes, whom he married March 26, 1977; daughter, Sarah Rhodes-Ondi and her husband, Attila Ondi of Sebastian, Fla; son, David Alan Rhodes Jr. and his wife, Janelle Hartman Rhodes of Howland; grandchild, Gabriel Rhodes-Ondi of Sebastian, Fla.; brother, Eugene (Marsha) Rhodes of Howland; and sister, Jacquelyn (Toby) Abrutz of Hubbard.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2022, at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Niles and from 10 to 10:50 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2022, at St. Rose Church in Girard, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. James Korda as the celebrant.

David’s final resting place will be in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made, in Dr. Rhodes’ name, to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, St. Rose Catholic School or the Rotary Club of Niles.
