Harold J. Meyer 1948-2021

YOUNGSTOWN — Harold James Meyer Jr., 73, passed away peacefully in his home, with his loving wife and dog by his side, on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021.

Harold was born Jan. 25, 1948, in New Castle, Pa. He was the son of Harold James Meyer Sr. and Ruth Book Gunther.

He graduated from Union High School in New Castle, Pa., and upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy. During that time, he met his wife, Maria Leal. They were married at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Boston, Mass. They had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Harold was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy and was stationed in Morocco on the USS Wasp, at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Dobbins Air Reserve Base and Andrews Air Force Base. Harold retired from the Navy after 20 years of service.

Harold is survived by his wife, Maria; five children, Robert Meyer (Janet), David Meyer (Kim), Lisa Morelli (Eugene), Rebecca Meyer (Brandon Scholl) and Christina Diglaw (Jamison); grandchildren, Dominic, Josie, Aida, Adrian, Alex, Jason and Nicole; great-granddaughter, Emma; his brother, John Gunther (Nadine); sister, Vickie Rudrud (Mike); stepsisters, Nancy and Judy; two nieces and nephews and their families, Jose Vasquez, Lucia Vasquez, Lori Callahan and Billy and Ritchie Michaels; and last, but not least, he leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved dog, Carley.

He was preceded in death by his mother; daughter-in-law, Kathy Meyer; and son-in-law, Jeff Smith.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2022, in the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Youngstown, with the Very Rev. Monsignor Michael J. Cariglio Jr. officiating. The family kindly asks that all guests arrive at the Basilica at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

Burial, with full military honors, will immediately follow at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
