NILES -- A Girard woman was convicted of a domestic violence charge, but an additional charge of assault on a police officer was dismissed.
Kelly R. Riley, 40, of East Wilson Street, Girard, was taken after Thursday's incident to Trumbull Regional Medical Center by ambulance. After being checked at the hospital, Riley was booked into the Trumbull County jail shortly before 11 p.m.
At arraignment Friday morning in Niles Municipal Court, Riley pleaded no contest to the domestic violence charge, received six months probation and was credited for two days served in jail. She was fined $250 plus $147 in court costs. The assault charge was dismissed upon approval of the police officer, the court record states.
Riley was released from jail shortly before 10 a.m. Friday, jail records show.
A Niles police officer responded shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday to check the welfare of a woman who told someone that she was taking 40 Valium and did not want to be found. An emergency ping to the woman's cellphone showed her to be driving in the Mason Street area, a police report states.
A dispatcher told officers that the woman warned that if officers "traffic stopped her she wanted to die (by) suicide by cop."
An officer found the woman's vehicle in the driveway of a home in the 600 block of Mason Street. Officers, through the efforts of the woman's son, got inside the home and found the woman in the bedroom. As officers were walking her from the bedroom to the hallway, the woman broke away and swung her arm back at the officer's face and head, the report states.
The officer avoided the blow and managed to handcuff her. The woman continued to use harsh and threatening language to both her son and officers as she was brought to the ground, the report states.
