Benjamin Myers 1936-2022

ALTADENA, Calif. — Benjamin “Sonny” Myers, 85, who passed Monday, March 14, 2022, was born in Cleveland, on March 20, 1936, to Ardenia Myers and David Thompson. He was raised from birth by the Rev. B.J. Myers and his wife, Elizabeth.

Benjamin “Sonny” served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He loved to read and travel, but most of all, he loved the Lord, he loved to sing for the Lord, and he loved his family. He was a member, from an early age, of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Youngstown.

He moved to Altadena, Calif. in 1976, first uniting with Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church; he then united with Metropolitan Baptist Church in 1979, where he remained an active member until illness prevented him from attending.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory and mourn his loss, four daughters, Mary Chatman, Stephanie Myers, Allison (Robert) Thurston and Shana Myers, all of Youngstown; 17 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He leaves his siblings, Beverly (Moses) Denson, Carol Beaubien and Russell Gregory; second wife, Sharon Myers of Altadena, Calif.; stepchildren, Michelle Robinson and Jimmy Kirby; several cousins near and dear to him; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by both sets of parents; his son, Benjamin “Benjie”; his stepson, Noble Reynolds; his grandchildren, Clarence Jones, Damon Myers and Destiny Brown; and his siblings, Constance Brown and Bruce Gregory.

A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 646 Lakewood Ave., Youngstown.
