David F. Alter 1935-2021

LIBERTY — David Frank Alter, 86, loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021.

Born in 1935, to Raymond Alter and Mamie Frank Alter in Steubenville, Dave graduated from New Castle High School in Pennsylvania. He earned bachelor’s degrees in both biology and chemistry from Washington and Jefferson College and later another bachelor’s degree in public accounting from Youngstown State University.

Dave served honorably in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1959 to 1965, which he held among his proudest lifetime achievements and contributions to our country.

Dave passed the certified public accountant examination in 1970 and worked in public accounting for 13 years before joining the Schwebel Baking Company in 1983. He worked at Schwebel’s for more than 37 years, retiring in 2020 as company comptroller.

Dave’s boundless love for his family and his friends defined him most. An accountant to his core, he kept scrupulous records on all those he loved — on birthdays, anniversaries and other special events — and seized every opportunity to mark those occasions with a note or a kind word.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; his sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen, Michael (Anjali Goel) and Robert (Jeannine Alter); his grandchildren, Sarah, Simran, Sundhya, Naveen, Varun, Sadie, Jordan and Emma; extended family; and scores (if not hundreds) of colleagues, friends and acquaintances whose lives he touched with kindness, good humor, a firm handshake and his trademark eyewink.

Services will be today, Friday, Nov. 5, 2021, at 11: a.m., at Rodef Sholom Cemetery Chapel, Tod Homestead Cemetery, 2200 Belmont Ave., Youngstown, OH 44505.

Donations in Dave’s honor may be made to Congregation Ohev Beth Sholom, 1119 Elm St,. Youngstown, OH 44505; the Washington and Jefferson College David and Barbara Alter’s 50th Anniversary Scholarship Fund, 60 South Lincoln St., Washington, Pa. 15301; or the Youngstown State University Accounting Department, One University Plaza, Youngstown, OH 44555.
