Evangeline Chekouras 1932-2021

STOW — Evangeline Chekouras, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 6, 2021, at Akron City Hospital, after a brief illness.

She was born March 18, 1932, in Ashtabula, the daughter of Louis D. and Evriklia Saroglou Chekouras.

Evangeline graduated from Ashtabula High School Class of 1950 and completed her undergrad studies at Lake Erie College in 1954. She received her master’s degree in Library Sciences from The University of Illinois. She worked for many years as a librarian in Youngstown. She then went on to work as a medical librarian at Akron City Hospital in 1979 until her retirement in 1999.

She loved to follow the Cleveland Indians and enjoyed attending games, especially when Bob Feller was pitching. Evangeline also followed Tennis and enjoyed watching matches. She was an avid seamstress and loved making costumes and clothing for family and friends.

Evangeline is survived by her nephew, Dimitrios Economus, and her first cousin, Athena Cheras.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Vasillo Economus.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2021, at the Zaback-Williams-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 W. Prospect Ave., Ashtabula, with Fr. Theofannis Nacopoulos of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church presiding. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.
