Scott A. Wilhide 1961-2021

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Scott Alan Wilhide, 59, of Columbia, lost his courageous battle with ALS on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Scott was born in Youngstown, on Aug. 8, 1961. After living in Arizona and West Virginia, his family moved to South Carolina in 1971.

He graduated from Irmo High School in 1979 and Presbyterian College in 1983 with a B.A. in business administration. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He started his banking career at Lexington State Bank. He later dealt in real estate, insurance sales, and Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens as a safety officer and Santa’s “helper.”

Scott was involved in many activities in the community. One of those was Tartan Day South, in which he was given the Order of the Flaming Caber. He had been involved with Kid’s Day in Lexington, Leadership Lexington County, and the Irmo, Lexington and West Columbia Chambers of Commerce (with many awards and honors from all three). He was commissioner of Saluda Shoals Park and Irmo Chapin Recreation and Parks. He also served as anelder at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church.

Scott enjoyed cooking, hunting, golf, and being with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Beth Tripp Wilhide; father, Dr. James A. Wilhide; son, AJ Wilhide (Heather); his siblings, Karen Wilhide Hart (Charlie) and Kevin Wilhide; mother-in-law, Betty R. Tripp; and brothers-in-law, Jim Tripp (Terry) and Chuck Tripp (Kelly).

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Weaver Wilhide and brother-in-law, Mike Tripp.

He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephew.

The family would like to thank MSA hospice for the wonderful care given to Scott during his last few months. June, Tabitha, Tanieka, Joe Lynn, Dale and Tina are sent a heartfelt thanks.

Services for Scott will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, Saturday, April 10, 2021, starting at 2 p.m., with visitation at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Santa Scott Charities, 130 Fredericksburg Way, Columbia, SC 29210 or Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens, 500 Wildlife Pkwy., Columbia, SC 29210.
