Matthew R. Backes 1987-2021

CANAL WINCHESTER — Matthew R. Backes, 34, of Canal Winchester, formerly of Hubbard, passed away in his sleep at home, Monday, March 29, 2021.

Matthew was born March 22, 1987, in Youngstown, a son of Robert M. and Joanne Manijak Backes.

He was a 2005 graduate of Hubbard High School and in 2011 graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in hospitality management.

Matthew was a restaurant manager at Longhorn Steakhouse in Akron, Youngstown, and most recently in Columbus, for many years.

He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church.

He was an avid sports fan and loved the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Penguins, UNC basketball, and enjoyed golf, target shooting and playing cards.

Matthew also enjoyed swimming and boating on Lake Michigan with his Uncle Dave and Aunt Sue Remias, hanging out with his best friends in Columbus, Marcus and Stacy Brown, and his poker buddies, Kevin, Chris, Jerry and Dom.

He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family: his parents, Robert and Joanne of Hubbard; and his sister, Allison (Jeff) Black of Mason. He also leaves his niece and goddaughter, Madeleine Black; nephew, Spencer Black; godmother, Marie (Lee) Semko-Duncan; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Susan Manijak, and Robert and Eleanor Backes.

There will be a memorial Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2021, with the Rev. Michael Swierz officiating, at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, in the parish center. Due to COVID-19, safety precautions will be taken, the 6-foot rule will be honored and all guests whose health allow are asked to please wear a mask.

Matthew will be laid to rest in Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Matthew’s memory to St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Fire Restoration – Future Full of Hope Project, at 225 N. Main St., Hubbard, OH 44425.
