Leafy E. Huey 1926-2021

AUSTINTOWN — On Sunday, April 18, 2021, Leafy Elizabeth Huey gained her heavenly wings at Austintown Health Center, with her family by her side.

She was born Aug. 16, 1926, in Indiana County, Pa. Leafy attended Arcadia Elementary School and Indiana High School. Leafy was always proud of the fact she went to school with the famous actor Jimmy Stewart at Indiana High. After graduation, she worked at the Paragon Defense Plant in Indiana making hand grenades. She came to Youngstown in 1955 and worked at the Brass Rail and Champion Restaurants. In 1958, she was hired by the Youngstown Board of Education, and after 39 years, she retired in 1997.

After a short week of retirement, her favorite grandson (Mark) got her a new job at Manning’s Bakery. She worked there until 1999 when she received a call for help from her family in North Carolina. She then relocated to New Bern, N.C. to help care for her great-grandson. In 2006, after her job in North Carolina was complete, she moved back to Youngstown. Once again, her grandson got her another job at St. Mark’s Catering. In 2010, she finally retired and spent the last years of her “retired” life at Meridian Arms Assisted Living Center. Leafy’s favorite passion was playing bingo and she also enjoyed playing cards and dominos with family and friends. Leafy was always ready to dance and loved her Handel’s Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream.

Leafy is survived by her daughter, Patricia Granchay of Canfield; her favorite grandchild, Mark Granchay (Ashlee) of Canfield, who helped care for his grandmother for many years; a son, Edward Johnson and his wife Mary of New Bern, N.C.; their children, Kelli (Shane) Malone, Jeff (Opal) Johnson and Timothy (Jennifer) Johnson, all of New Bern, N.C. She leaves seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Leafy is survived by a sister, Bonnie (Edward) Pesce of Girard; two sisters-in-law, Gerry Huey of Youngstown and Peggy Huey of Freedom, Pa. Leafy also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Leafy was preceded in death by her parents, Doyle and Ruth Fyock Huey; a son-in-law, John G. Granchay; three brothers, Clayton, Kenneth and William; four sisters, Velma, Helen, Betty and an infant sister; a sister-in-law, Betty Huey; and a brother-in-law, Lou Sheehe.

Family and friends will gather Thursday, April 22, 2021, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Schiavone Funeral Home, followed by a prayer service officiated by the Rev. John Karr.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Meridian Arms Assisted Living Center and to her favorite nurse, Linda Flores who was like a daughter to Leafy. A special thank you to Paula Humphries. Also, thank you to Ashlee Hull, Taylor Hull and Leah Hunter, who helped care for Leafy the past couple of years and who were like granddaughters to Leafy. Also, thank you to Hospice Care for helping care for and keeping her comfortable in her last few weeks.
