Carole Jane Pope Harwood 1939-2021
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Carole Jane Pope Harwood, 81, died of pneumonia Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Honor Health Hospital.
She was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Youngstown, the daughter of William Nesbit Pope and Ruth Ellen Rosenberger Pope.
Carole graduated from South High School in Youngstown in 1957 and earned her bachelor’s degree in education at Youngstown State University in 1961. She taught at Shaker Heights High School in Cleveland.
Carole married William Timothy Harwood, June 15, 1963, in Cleveland, and they moved to Carmel, Calif. Her husband, Tim, was in the produce business in Salinas, Calif. She taught at Washington Middle School in Salinas and Seaside High School in Seaside, Calif.
Tim and Carole eventually made their home in Monterey, Calif. and had two daughters, Kierin and Alicia. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. Carole spent her time helping in the family produce brokerage firm, The Harwood Company, Inc. and volunteering at the Catholic schools Kierin and Alicia attended. She served on the boards of both San Carlos School in Monterey and Notre Dame High School in Salinas. She was a member of The Junior League of Monterey County and loved supporting women’s and children’s causes throughout Monterey County. Junior League is where she made some of her closest friends in California. Carole was an animal advocate and was one of the original members of Pets Are Warm and Special (PAWS) in Salinas, which provided low-cost spaying and neutering services for animals. She was a member of San Carlos Catholic Parish in Monterey.
Carole moved to Scottsdale full time after the death of her husband, Tim, in 1995. In Scottsdale, she worked as a paralegal for Apker, Apker, Haggard and Kurtz. She helped her daughter, Alica, and her husband, Michael Whitney Butt, raise their two daughters, Jordan and Cassidy. In Arizona, Carole continued her volunteerism. She helped fundraise for The Arizona Humane Society and delivered meals for 20 years for Meals On Wheels. In Scottsdale, she was a member of Saint Patricks’s Catholic Parish.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William Timothy Harwood.
She is survived by her daughter, Kierin Carole Harwood-Short and her husband Roger Short of Salinas, Calif.; her daughter Alicia Erin Butt and her husband Michael Whitney Butt of Scottsdale.; their daughters Jordan Whitney Butt of New York City, N.Y. and Cassidy Erin Butt, who attends the University of San Francisco. Also, she is survived by her brother, James M. Pope and his wife Joan M. Pope of Berlin Center, Ohio; and her grand-nephew, Kenneth James Pope,of Kent, Ohio.
Carole will be buried alongside her parents in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boardman.
Small, private family services in Youngstown will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation hours. A funeral Mass will be held for family and friends in June 2021.
Services in Scottsdale will be a private family Mass.
Services in Monterey will be held at San Carlos Cathedral on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at 10 a.m.
