Joseph Jacob Bishop 1953-2021

YOUNGSTOWN — Joseph Jacob Bishop, 67, passed away Monday, March 1, 2021, peacefully at his home.

Joseph Jacob Bishop, affectionately known as “Joe,” was born on July 25, 1953, to Betty Ruth Bishop Harkins and Jacob Bishop in Youngstown.

Joe was a lifelong resident of Youngstown. He was a graduate of The Rayen High School, class of 1973. Joe worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, LB Foster Steel, Marquette Food Service, YSU, and finally, Stambaugh Auditorium before retiring.

Joe enjoyed fishing, reading the newspaper, and playing the daily lotto and was a sports enthusiast. Joe played in many softball and hardball leagues around the Valley. He could play all nine positions on the baseball diamond, but dominated at short stop and second base, where he was all-county. He played for many teams such as Blake’s Bar, Clyde Street Cafe, and Fabulous Goldstein’s Furniture. Joe was a die-hard New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, hardly missing any of their games. Joe was very outgoing, never meeting a stranger. He was very helpful to others and had an infectious sense of humor. He enjoyed listening to the sounds of The O’Jays, The Doobie Brothers, and Jeffrey Osborne. His favorite comedian was George Carlin, whom many people often mistook him for.

Joe leaves behind his only daughter, Faith Bishop Smith (Vern) of Houston, Texas; two sons, Joseph M. Bishop (Nicole) of Vermont and Stephen Bishop of Girard; and his cousin, Sandy Yanci (Jim) of Cortland. He also leaves his best friend of over fifty years, Sam Dubois, his Shih Tzu, Hairy, and many friends who he considered loved ones.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Aris D. Bishop.

The Schiavone Funeral Home will have calling hours from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, March 5, 2021, followed by Joe’s funeral service at noon.
