Vernon Davis, 1949-2021

YOUNGSTOWN –Vernon Bernard “Stretch” Davis, aka Freeman Davis, 72, of Woodford Avenue, Youngstown, departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021, at 4:20 p.m. at the Hospice House, following an extended illness.

He was born Jan. 15, 1949, in Youngstown, the son of Freeman and Nellie Thompson Davis.

Mr. Davis was employed with GMAC for 30 years as an auditor, before retiring in 2014.

He was a member of the Victory Christian Center, was an amateur light middleweight boxer for Tomez AC and graduated in 1967 from North High School. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. He loved taking his niece, Honey Hunter and great-nieces and -nephew, Ms. Nevaeh, Ms. Zoeyo and Josiah Davis roller skating, bowling and shopping.

He served honorably in the Air Force as a sergeant during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1973, receiving several honors.

He leaves to mourn five brothers, Gordan (Wilma Yeli) Davis of Aibonito, Puerto Rico, Chris Vaughn and Ronald Davis, both of Youngstown, Darren Davis of Columbus and Terrence Murphy of Youngstown; one sister, Mrs. Robin Rochelle (Dave) Hunter of Liberty; second mother, Ms. Nellie Smith; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, at 11 a.m., with calling hours from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Sterling-McCullough Williams Youngstown Chapel. Burial will take place at Belmont Park Cemetery.
