John W. Guffey Jr. 1938-2020

GREENVILLE, S.C. — John Wesley Guffey Jr., 82, died Friday, Dec. 25, 2020, in Greenville.

He was the son of the late John Wesley and Audrey Smith Guffey Sr. and was born in Zanesville on Feb. 7, 1938.

John was a graduate of New Springfield High School in Ohio and was a 1962 graduate of Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in metallurgy, industrial engineering and mathematics.

John was well known in the corporate world and worked at SOHIO, Carlisle Corp., Garlock Inc., General Tire & Rubber Co., Aeroquip Corp. and General Motors. He held the position of chairman, president and CEO of Coltec Industries Inc. in Charlotte, N.C., that merged with B.F. Goodrich in July 1999.

John leaves to share in his memory, his wife, Monique Yellin Guffey, whom he married in 1999. He also leaves a daughter, Terri Lynn Potter (John Hudak); a son, Mark Raymond Guffey; and the mother of his children, Carol Griffiths, all of Warren. He leaves five grandchildren, Ryan (Eileen) Potter of Bridgeville, Del., Danielle Potter of Terre Haute, Ind., and Deanne (John) Lione of Salisbury, Mass., Johnny (Amber) Guffey of Akron and Addie Guffey of Warren. He also leaves three great-grandchildren, Colton Potter, Barrett Potter and Blayke Potter; his brother, Don (Betsy) Guffey of Berlin Center; and sister, Judy Guffey Sheridan Bogan of Monroe, N.C. He also leaves numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

John touched so many lives in his almost 83 years on this earth and will be missed by so many.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving grandmother, Bernice Smith Davis, who was certainly the “glue” that held us all together.
